Froemke's The Opera House Screening in the City

(released 1/7/2018)

The Metropolitan Opera presents: The Opera House.  The film includes archival footage, stills, interviews and 50 years of Metropolitan Opera history. The artists, architects, and politicians who shaped the culture of 1950's-60's New York will be chronicled in the 108 minute film.

The Opera House is a documentary film by filmmaker Susan Froemke that will screen in North American cities only January 13 and January 17, 2018. In New York, screenings will be held at Union Square 14, Kips Bay 15, and the Empire 25.

Susan Froemke is a disciple of the Maysles brothers style of direct cinema. Direct cinema aims to capture the drama of real life as it presents itself with minimal intervention from behind the camera. Froemke has more than 30 documentary titles to her credit and went on to run the Maysles Film Center after the death of David Maysles before starting her own production company in 2003.

The Opera House premiered October 1, 2017 at the Met Opera House as part of the Film Society of Lincoln Center's 55th annual New York Film Festival. This was the first time the festival screened in the opera house as part of the festival programming. The filmmaker Froemke teamed with now Met General Manager Peter Gelb to produce The Opera House. The two have been collaborating since the 1980's on music documentary films. Their first was Ozawa, a film about conductor Seiji Ozawa.
