Special Guests for Iris at Maysles Doc Center

(released 5/19/2015)

One of the last films created by the late Albert Maysles is screening at the Harlem-based theater that bears his name, the Maysles Documentary Center.  The feature documentary Iris is making a week run from Thursday, May 21 through Wednesday, May 27.

The documentary, which premiered at the 2014 New York Film Festival, is about Iris Apfel, a 93 year old fashion maven.  It is described by the distributor Magnolia Pictures as follows.

More than a fashion film, the documentary is a story about creativity and how a soaring free spirit continues to inspire. IRIS portrays a singular woman whose enthusiasm for fashion, art and people are life's sustenance and reminds us that dressing, and indeed life, is nothing but an experiment. Despite the abundance of glamour in her current life, she continues to embrace the values and work ethic established during a middle-class Queens upbringing during the Great Depression. "I feel lucky to be working. If you're lucky enough to do something you love, everything else follows."

In support of the film, a few Q&A sessions have been lined up at the Maysles Doc Center.

Thursday, May 21st: Q&A with producer and daughter of Albert Maysles, Rebekah Maysles, and Nelson Walker, director of photography and co-director of Albert Maysles' other last work In Transit.

Friday, May 22nd: Q&A with producer Laura Coxson, and editor and co-producer Paul Lovelace.

Tuesday, May 26th: Q&A with director of photography Nick Canfield.

Wednesday, May 27th: Subject Iris Apfel in person interviewed by historian Michael Henry Adams (Author of "Harlem Lost and Found").

Maysles Documentary Center is located at 343 Lenox Avenue in Harlem.  For more info, go to: maysles.org
