Menin Appointed Media & Entertainment Commissioner

Mayor de Blasio appointed Julie Menin Commissioner of the Mayor's Office of Media and Entertainment on February 2, 2016.

Julie Menin has held the Office of Commissioner of the Department of Consumer Affairs. A mother of three, she graduated Magna Cum Laude from Columbia University and earned a JD at Northwestern Law.  Menin's history has a natural leadership tone. Julie Menin has played a key role in Lower Manhattan vitalization spearheading business growth and stabilization post-Sept 11 serving the public by bridging government assistance to the citizens that could be recipients and maintain a small business presence in Lower Manhattan. Menin was a part of Tribeca's first festival launch and through her Non Profit Wall Street Rising and partnering with Robert De Niro and Jane Rosenthal brought Art Downtown and Music Downtown that in turn brought people to Lower Manhattan developing the area economy. Menin served seven years as Chairperson for Community Board 1 leading Lower Manhattan future growth. Menin secured $150 million in public funds to bring the community The World Trade Center Performing Arts Center. Production is not foreign to Julie Menin as she created, co-produced, and served as host to NBC's Give and Take focusing on health, politics and current events in an interview format.

In a release from the Mayor's Office, the statement regarding Menin was: "Julie has shown time and again that she is a highly effective leader who has the skills and passion to get the job done for New Yorkers," said Mayor Bill de Blasio. "As DCA Commissioner, Julie saved everyday New Yorkers thousands of dollars, reduced fines on small businesses, and spearheaded campaigns to uplift NYC's residents in all five boroughs. I have the utmost confidence she will bring that same spark and commitment to MOME as it grows its reach in the media and entertainment community."

The Mayor's release also shared a who's who of film, TV, and industry executives who do business in New York and are confidently excited about de Blasio's new appointment of Julie Menin. Les Moonves, George Miranda, Kimberly Harris, Douglas C. Steiner, Gina Argento, Senator Dodd, Jane Rosenthal, Stuart Match Suna are all voicing support for the future impact that Menin's leadership can manifest for New Yorkers. The Mayor's Office of Media and Entertainment is going to include advertising, digital distribution channels, broaden engagement with off Broadway, Broadway Theater, and music.

"Julie's had a strong track record of success as Consumer Affairs Commissioner, and I am confident that Julie will deepen the City's ties with this critically important industry by being a creative and collaborative partner, creating new jobs and opportunities for New Yorkers," said Deputy Mayor Alicia Glen.
