ImageNation is putting on a tribute to Firelight Media on August 28th in Marcus Garvey Park. ImageNation is honoring 25 years of Firelight. They are a non-profit media company co-founded by Stanley Nelson and Marcia Smith which has been a champion for documentary filmmakers of color.
The event will consist of an outdoor screening of Stanley Nelson's
We Want The Funk. WE WANT THE FUNK! is a syncopated voyage through the history of funk music, spanning from African, soul, and early jazz roots, to its rise into the public consciousness. Featuring James Brown's dynamism, the extraterrestrial funk of George Clinton's Parliament Funkadelic, transformed girl group Labelle, and Fela Kuti's Afrobeat, the story also traces funk's influences on both new wave and hip-hop. There will be a talkbalk with Starlight Co-Founders Stanley Nelson and Marcia Smith along with current CEO Loira Limbal.
Also among the highlights will a Funk Dance Party with DJ Stormin' Norman, a Soul Train Dance Line, and a Funk Tribute to Sly Stone, James Brown, Labelle and more.
