Opens at Angelika (released 5/13/2024) By Kimberly Burke "Who is Stan Smith?" is a new documentary film about tennis legend Stan Smith also known for his sneaker line and civic activism. The film had its NY premiere on Friday May 10th, 2024 at the Angelika Film Center in Manhattan. The documentary journeys through Stan Smith's accomplishment's in tennis as a world number one player and two-time major singles champion at the 1971 US Open and 1972 Wimbledon Championships. Smith also paired with Bob Lutz to create the most successful doubles team of all-time. He also took title at the Dallas WCT Finals and won four Grand Prix Championships series titles. As an activist he was inspired by fellow tennis player Arthur Ashe who's window Jeanne Moutoussamy-Ashe is featured in the documentary. His anti-racist activism lead him to a relationship with Black player, Mark Mathabane, whom Smith helped escape from apartheid in South Africa. Smith also was active in AIDS awareness. The film is directed by Danny Lee who is a multi-disiciplinary filmmaker who says on his website "I'm inspired by culture & the human condition. "Who is Stan Smith?" is a new documentary film about tennis legend Stan Smith also known for his sneaker line and civic activism.
