The Neutral Ground Opens POV's 34th Season

(released 7/5/2021)

PBS's 34th Season of POV starts today and kicking it off is CJ Hunt's The Neutral Ground. The Neutral Ground premiered at last month's Tribeca Festival. It received a special jury mention by the documentary jury "for the way their use of humor brought audiences into a difficult subject, with vulnerability, authenticity, and at great personal risk."

The Neutral Ground started out in 2015 with director and subject CJ Hunt filming the New Orleans City Council vote to remove four Confederate monuments. When that removal was halted by death threats, Hunt set out to understand why a losing army from 1865 still holds so much power in America today.

Hunt looks at America's troubled romance with the Lost Cause. The film explores race in America as a whole, while also looking at his own racial identity as African American and Filipino American.

CJ Hunt is a producer on The Daily Show with Trevor Noah. The Neutral Ground was executive produced by Roy Wood, Jr., who also works with Hunt on The Daily Show as a correspondent, along with Sally Jo Fifer of ITVS. The producer was Darcy McKinnon, a local New Orleans filmmaker.

The Neutral Ground is available on the POV website beginning tonight at 9:30pm and will be available through August 4th.
