THE 33RD NEW YORK AFRICAN FILM FESTIVAL is settling into Brooklyn’s BAM Rose Cinemas from May 22 to May 28 as FilmAfrica, part of DanceAfrica 2026, BAM's longest-running program and the nation's largest celebration of African diasporic dance, music, and culture. FilmAfrica is curated by the African Film Festival.

The Opening Night film will be May 22 at BAM. A TRIBE CALLED LOVE is the opening film, a Romeo + Juliet story of sweethearts Farah and Halima fighting traditional cultural divides and able to preserve their love. The film is set in a Somali neighborhood in Toronto. The director, producer, and cast members from the film will attend the screening.

At BAM the 33rd NYAFF features 17 feature films and 21 short films from Africa. Following the run at BAM, the festival will return to Harlem for outdoor screenings at St. Nicholas Park on May 30, 2026.
