Sentimental Value: Trier & Reinsve Reunion @ NYFF
(released Monday, October 6, 2025)
By Kimberly Burke

Not everyone receives a 19 minute standing ovation at a film festival, but the 2025 film "Sentimental Value" did just that at the 78th annual Cannes. It had its world premiere in the main competition of the 2025 Cannes Film Festival and won the Grand Prix.

Neon bought the distribution rights for the United States in May 2024 at the Cannes Film Festival when the film was first announced. In May 2024, Mubi announced that they acquired rights to the film for the United Kingdom, Ireland, Latin America, Turkey and India. It screened in Open Air Premiere Programme at the 31st Sarajevo Film Festival in August 2025. It released in France on August 20, 2025 by Memento. In the United States, Neon will release the film on November 7, 2025. Elastica plans to release in Spain on December 5, 2025.

The film is currently at the New York Film Festival. On Tuesday, September 30, 2025, the film had its New York premiere as part of the main slate at the 63rd New York Film Festival. GreenRoomNewYork.com captured the film's red carpet that evening.

The film has been selected as the Norwegian entry for Best International Feature Film at the upcoming 98th Academy Awards scheduled for March 15, 2026. It was released theatrically in Norway, September 12th by Nordisk Film.

Principal photography commenced August 2024 in Oslo.

About Sentimental Value:
"After the death of their mother Sissel, the estranged sisters Nora and Agnes Borg are forced to confront their distant father Gustav, a once-famous but now almost forgotten film director who abandoned the family when the girls were still young; Nora, now a driven stage actress, has prioritized her career above all else, while Agnes chose a stable life with a husband, child, and secure job—creating a stark contrast that further strains their relationship. Gustav, convinced that an autobiographical screenplay he's written will be his ticket back to fame, wants to tell the story of his mother, who took her own life in the family home in Norway—a place still partially owned by him and haunted by the trauma she endured from Nazi torture during the war. He offers the lead role to Nora, but she firmly refuses, prompting him to cast Hollywood actress Rachel Kemp instead, whom he met during a retrospective of his films in France. As filming begins, Gustav seizes the opportunity not only to revive his artistic legacy but also to mend the deeply fractured relationships with his daughters."
