The 2025 feature film Blue Moon tells the story of songwriter Lorenz Hart, played by actor Ethan Hawke, who is struggling with alcoholism and his mental health. The film is largely set on the opening night date of March 31,1943 for Rogers and Hammerstein's "Oklahoma". Lorenz Hart reflects on himself on the opening night. Hart's colleague and former creative partner Richard Rogers is played by actor Andrew Scott. The film is set mostly at the bar in the theater district restaurant called Sardi's.
Hart slips out of opening night early and heads to Sardi's before the afterparty to get drunk and complain about his former creative partner's new musical. Bobby Cannavale is the barman Eddie, who lends his ear but is trying not to serve Hart liquor.
The film was written by Robert Kaplow. Richard Linklater directed the film and produced alongside John Sloss. Principle photography took place in Ireland from July 2024 to September 2024. Ethan Hawke, Margaret Qualley, Bobby Cannavale, and Andrew Scott joined the cast in June of 2024 after the film was announced to be made earlier in that month. Graham Reynolds was named composer of the score. Sony Pictures Classics acquired Blue Moon's worldwide distribution rights.
Blue Moon premiered February 18, 2025 at the Berlin International Film Festival. The film had its New York premiere at the 63rd New York Film Festival as a spotlight feature on Monday, September 29, 2025. The film is scheduled for a limited theatrical release on October 17, 2025.
