(released Saturday, September 27, 2025)
By Kimberly Burke

This film is had its North American Premiere as the Main Slate Opening Night film of the New York Film Festival 63 on Friday, September 26, 2025 at Alice Tully Hall.

Director Luca Guadagnino takes the drama of a philosophy professor at Yale who has a student that admires her, but comes to her with the accusation that a fellow professor has sexually assaulted the student. Julia Roberts plays the philosophy professor with Ayo Edebiri portraying the student. Andrew Garfield plays the colleague who is also a close friend to Roberts’ character. Adding a layer to Roberts' character is her own secretive past involving a sexual assault allegation.

The film, written by Nora Garrett, began principal photography in London at Cambridge University on July 6, 2024. The film world premiered out of competition at the 82nd Venice International Film Festival on August 29, 2025. It is scheduled to be released in the United States by Amazon MGM Studios on October 10, 2025.

During a press conference held Friday, September 26, Writer Nora Garrett was asked about the writing.

Nora said, "My first construction going into writing was not thinking about how many potential buttons to push simultaneously. The genesis of the screenplay really started with the character of Alma, played by Julia Roberts. And I was really interested in her internal struggle, this idea of becoming a very outwardly successful person, becoming someone who was looking for power chasing power, but had this sort of internal compartmentalization based on a certain amount of shame from childhood or from a place when you had a certain amount of plausible deniability about the person you were and the person you would become. So the story kind of grew around that."

The following question went to Director Luca Guadagnino. "And then the two of you at some point worked on the screenplay together. Can you talk about what developments you might have added to your work together?"

Luca replied, "One of the great pleasures of my life is to work with writers that are brilliant like Nora, and this was quite, quite a brisk process. I read the script, we met, we said, "Let's do it." And then, the morning after I was already chatting with Nora, more and more. I think when you get the script that is so good and so strong, the duty is to make sure that that embodiment is reflected in the script, because we had the privilege of working discussions. We want to make sure that every character could become the perfect character for each way, and to get their inputs into each as well."
