Enjoy French Cinema For Bastille Day in NYC
(released Tuesday, July 8, 2025)
By Douglas Lorah

Bastille Day is July 14th, but because it falls on a Monday, it is being celebrated in New York on Sunday, July 13th this year.  The biggest celebration in the city will be on Madison Avenue from 59th to 63rd Streets. The event will take place from noon to 5pm.

The French are known for their cuisine, so you can expect French food including a tasting party. And of course, they are known for their cinema, so L'Alliance New York will be screening Jour de fête by Jacques Tati. The screening will take place in the Florence Gould Theater starting at 1:30pm.

Jour de fête (1949) - In a small French town, the local postman, scatterbrained and bumbling François (played by Tati himself), spends his working hours casually delivering the mail, while being the subject of the townsfolk's teasing. When a traveling carnival arrives in town, a drunken François is goaded into watching a film depicting the efficiency of the U.S. Postal Service. Inspired by the footage, the hapless François sets out on his bicycle to become just like the mail carriers in the United States.

They will follow up with a screening of Bonnard, Pierre & Marthe by Martin Provost at 5:30pm, also in the Florence Gould Theater.

Bonnard, Pierre & Marthe (2023) - When aspiring French painter Pierre Bonnard (Vincent Macaigne), a protégé of Claude Monet, meets the enigmatic Marthe de Méligny (Cécile de France), he has no idea that this self-styled aristocrat will become the central force in both his life and art. Far more than a muse—though she appears in over a third of his works—Marthe becomes Bonnard’s lifelong partner, as the two embark on a deeply intertwined journey of love, artistic exploration, and emotional complexity. Spanning five decades, their story challenges the norms of their time and delves into the enduring mystery of their relationship.

The theater is located inside L'Alliance located at 22 East 60th Street along the event route. Here's a link for all the details about the Bastille Day celebration: https://lallianceny.org.
