RBG Filmmakers Creating Julia Child Documentary

(released 10/21/2019)

Coming off an Academy Award® nomination and Emmy® Award win, Julie Cohen and Betsy West are teaming up again.  On October 8th, CNN Films announced they are partnering with Imagine Documentaries and the RBG filmmakers to create a feature length doc on the life of Julia Child.

Cohen and West are set to direct and produce the film alongside Imagine Documentaries’ Justin Wilkes and Sara Bernstein.  Executive producing are Brian Grazer (Imagine), Ron Howard (Imagine), Michael Rosenberg (Imagine), Amy Entelis (CNN), Courtney Sexton (CNN), and Oren Jacoby (Storyville Films).

Since Julia Child died in 2004, the documentary will rely on a treasure trove of never-before-seen archival video, personal still photos, and first-person narratives.  'JULIA' is being produced with the full cooperation of Julia Child’s friends, family, and the Julia Child Foundation.

Julia Child created and published the classic cookbook Mastering the Art of French Cooking in 1961 and had a national cooking show called The French Chef on WGBH that started in 1963.

"Nothing gets us more pumped than telling stories of women who accomplished things people said they could never do," said Cohen.  "Julia's story has inspiration, romance, and plenty of spice."

"Julia was first," added West.  "Without her, there would have been no Emeril Lagasse or Rachael Ray or countless other celebrity chefs.  We are thrilled to partner with Imagine Documentaries, and to collaborate again with CNN Films to bring the story of this bold and singular woman to the big screen in all its delicious glory."

Storyville Films was formed in 1994 by Academy Award®-nominee Oren Jacoby to produce documentaries and series driven by strong personal narratives of conscience, courage, and innovation.  Betsy West joined the company in 2005 and Julie Cohen in 2016.
