Apollo Theater 80th Birthday Celebration

The Apollo Theater is celebrating being 80 years old with a Spring gala to be held Tuesday evening June 10, 2014.

Wayne Brady will host performers: Gladys Knight, Natalie Cole, Smokey Robinson, Edwin Hawkins, Joss Stone, Human Nature and The Isley Brothers.

The performance will begin at 7:00p.m. and the party of cocktails, buffet and dancing begins at 8:45p.m.

The Apollo Theater will honor Bank of New York Mellon the same evening with the Corporate Award and Richard D. Parsons with the Leadership award. The eight decades of musical and cultural influence the Apollo theater has produced began in 1934 when Sidney Cohen and partner Morris Sussmen bought the then closed burlesque theater and turned their focus on entertaining the growing African American community of Harlem. Today, the theater's outreach includes educational programs, community orientation, developing talent, and providing one of the strongest stages and toughest audiences with a purpose to elevate you from amateur to professional talent.
