Veselka: The Movie at Village East

VESELKA: THE MOVIE is opening Friday, February 23 at the Village East by Angelika. Veselka the famous east village Ukrainian restaurant has been in the neighborhood for 70 years, since 1954. The documentary film titled VESELKA: THE RAINBOW ON THE CORNER AT THE CENTER OF THE WORLD takes a look at the beloved restaurant best known for its borscht and varenyky, that has become a beacon of hope for Ukraine. As the second-generation owner Tom Birchard reluctantly retires after 54 years, his son Jason faces the pressures of stepping into his father's shoes as the war in Ukraine impacts his family and staff.

The film is written and directed by Michael Fiore. David Duchovny narrates the film and saxophonist David Sanborn is part of the musical score.  David Duchovny in a statement on the film's Instagram page @veselkamovie said, "I am grateful for the very meaningful opportunity to lend my voice to a place and a part of the city that's a big part of my childhood, history and heritage." David Duchovny grew up two blocks north of Veselka and witnessed the storefront and the neighborhood's growth over the decades. David Sanborn's saxophone sounds are synonymous to the Big Apple.
