The Sound She Saw Screening at Brooklyn Museum

(released 2/2/2023)

The Brooklyn Museum has a program called First Saturdays.  This Saturday, February 4th, they open up at 5pm and have all kinds of live arts and sometimes a market through 10pm. For February 2023, they are celebrating Black History Month as well as 25 years of First Saturdays. The theme is Legacy, honoring the legacy of Black artistic production in Brooklyn.

There will be cocktails, music, a sneaker workshop, music, poetry reading, music, dance, and a film.

The film is The Sound She Saw by Crystal Whaley.  It starts at 8:30pm and has a running time of 51 minutes. The screening is followed by a talkback with the filmmaker and subjects.

"The Sound She Saw spotlights groundbreaking contemporary Black women photographers, revealing their histories and struggles while celebrating their work. The film also answers a compelling question: What happens when a Black woman photographer has the agency to reverse the gaze and see the world through her unique lens?"

Entry to the First Saturdays program is free, although registration is encouraged and includes museum general admission.  The Brooklyn Museum is located at 200 Eastern Parkway. Check out all the art they'll have on their website: www.brooklynmuseum.org
